Chapter 153 Father and daughter meet
Chapter 153 Father and daughter meet
"Xiuxiu..."
He suddenly yelled and sat up. His unfocused gaze lingered on the blanket for a moment before he realized he was in bed. He wiped the sweat from his forehead, threw on a coat, hastily slipped on his shoes, rushed to the table, poured himself a bowl of water, and gulped it down.
Ever since he offered sacrifices to Zheng Xiuxiu that day, he has been dreaming about her every night for the past few days. She tells him that she has become a wandering ghost and asks him to help her reincarnate.
But looking at her headless figure, he didn't even have the courage to go up to her and ask how he could help her. He opened the drawer, took out a small box, and inside the box lay a white jade earring.
Zheng Cunsheng picked up the earring with trembling hands. It was a sixteenth birthday gift he had asked someone to bring back from a town outside the city for Zheng Xiuxiu. After she disappeared all those years ago, when he found this earring at the entrance of that cave, he knew she would never come back, his Xiuxiu would never come back.
He gently stroked the earring, as if he were caressing his beloved daughter. In a daze, he seemed to see Zheng Xiuxiu's beautiful face smiling sweetly at him, leaning against him affectionately, calling him "Daddy..."
"Xiuxiu..."
"Xiuxiu..."
"What exactly happened that day? Why did you go there...?"
He murmured softly, his eyes welling up with tears, as if something was about to burst forth. For so many years, he hadn't even dared to offer her a sacrifice, fearing the villagers would find out she had trespassed into the cave. He hadn't even dared to tell his wife, afraid she wouldn't be able to accept it, because legend had it that those eaten by the creature in the cave lost their souls, let alone be reincarnated.
His wife believed until her death that her child had simply gotten lost in the woods. Getting lost doesn't necessarily mean being dead.
"Do you really want to know what happened that day?" A clear, melodious voice suddenly rang out.
Hearing the sound, Zheng Cunsheng was so startled that his hand trembled, and the earring fell from his wrist. He didn't care about the earring still rolling on the table. Trembling, he looked up and saw a young woman standing opposite him, someone he hadn't noticed before.
This girl had a face as beautiful as a lotus flower, with red lips and white teeth; she was exceptionally beautiful. Especially her charming eyes and brows added an indescribable allure to her entire face. Yet, her eyes were so pure and innocent, without a trace of impurity.
Despite being two completely different styles, they suited her face perfectly. She wore a white, light gauze dress, exuding an aura of nobility unlike that of an inhuman being, like a fairy from the heavens, carrying an awe-inspiring and dignified air.
After a moment of shock, he belatedly asked, "Who...who are you? How did you get in here?"
Geng Miaowan chuckled softly. "You don't need to know who I am. I'm only asking you, do you want to help your daughter enter the cycle of reincarnation?"
“I…” Zheng Cunsheng was stunned for a moment, a different expression flashing across his face. He suddenly looked at Geng Miaowan, “How do you know Xiuxiu? Who exactly are you?”
Geng Miaowan sat down in the chair opposite him. "Let me put it this way, I'm her friend."
“Friend…friend!” Zheng Cunsheng’s face hardened, and he said sternly, “Xiuxiu has been dead for fifty years. How could she have a friend as young as you?” Moreover, he knew all of Xiuxiu’s friends. “Why would a young lady make a joke about a dead person?”
“I’m not joking, I’m her friend now.”
"Now...now..." Zheng Cunsheng suddenly stood up, his eyes wide. He stumbled back several steps. Zheng Xiuxiu was dead, yet she claimed to be his current friend. If, as she said, his daughter had become a ghost, then wouldn't his ghost friend also be...?
Thinking of this, he took another step back.
"Don't worry, I'm not a ghost." Geng Miaowan saw through his thoughts. Seeing that his expression softened slightly after hearing her words, she added.
"Then...who are you?"
"When the time is right, I will tell you. Now you need to tell me, are you willing to help Zheng Xiuxiu reincarnate and be reborn as a human?"
Zheng Cunsheng stood there blankly, trying to process the meaning behind Geng Miaowan's words, but his eyes clearly showed suspicion as he looked at her.
Seeing this, Geng Miaowan lightly tapped her finger, and a beam of light shot out from her fingertip, directly into Zheng Cunsheng's forehead. Zheng Cunsheng felt a refreshing sensation all over his body, and after blinking, he saw a headless person standing next to Geng Miaowan.
His face turned pale instantly, and he almost couldn't stand up. He was filled with fear and couldn't utter a single word.
"Daddy..."
"Daddy..."
"Xiuxiu..." he murmured involuntarily. He remembered that voice; it appeared in his heart every day.
He slapped himself hard across the face, the sound deafening; one could imagine how painful it must have been. The burning sensation on his face made Zheng Cunsheng collapse to the ground. "So it wasn't a dream after all..."
The fear in his heart couldn't overcome the bond of blood, allowing him to temporarily forget his terror. He had just opened his mouth to say something when Zheng Xiuxiu vanished.
"Xiuxiu..."
“Xiuxiu… my daughter…” Zheng Cunsheng scrambled to Geng Miaowan’s side, shaking her body. “Where is Xiuxiu? Where is my Xiuxiu? Give me back my Xiuxiu…”
"Now you should believe what I'm saying, right?"
However, Zheng Cunsheng kept asking questions like, "Where is Xiuxiu? Where did Xiuxiu go?"
"She was right next to me and didn't move."
"Then why can't I see her anymore?"
“She’s a ghost, so of course she can’t see you under normal circumstances.” After thinking for a moment, she explained, “You could see me just now because I cast a spell.”
Zheng Cunsheng slumped back into his chair, "So it was all true..."
He initially thought his dream about Zheng Xiuxiu was just a case of what he'd been thinking about during the day, but now it didn't seem so unreal. Could it be that his daughter had truly been a wandering ghost for so long, unable to be reincarnated even after being dead for so long?
Thinking of how Zheng Xiuxiu had always been kind-hearted and had never done anything wrong since childhood, yet suffered such a tragic fate after her death, Zheng Cunsheng's eyes welled up with tears, and his heart was filled with mixed emotions.
He forced back his tears and looked up at Geng Miaowan, "What can I do for her?" (To be continued.)
