Chapter 39: Enemy Approaches
Chapter 39: Enemy Approaches
"Old General, it's over!" Ren Xiaoyao pointed his sword straight at Marshal Sima's throat, his expression grim. Marshal Sima slumped to the ground, his face filled with disbelief. He had fought on the battlefield for decades, and never imagined he would be defeated by a young boy.
"General!" The remaining soldiers were filled with grief and anger, and wanted to rush forward, but were stopped by the soldiers behind Ren Xiaoyao. Seeing that the situation was hopeless, Deputy General Qian whispered, "General, as long as there is life, there is hope!"
Upon hearing this, Marshal Sima smiled bitterly: "I, Sima, have been a soldier all my life, but today I was defeated here. How can I have the dignity to live in this world!" After saying this, he actually struggled and wanted to commit suicide.
"General, you can't do that!" Deputy General Qian was horrified and rushed forward to snatch his sword.
"Let me go! Let me die!" Marshal Sima's eyes were red, and he looked like a mad tiger. Seeing this, Ren Xiaoyao waved away the crowd, dismounted, and slowly walked up to Marshal Sima.
"General Sima, victory and defeat are common in the military. Why are you so persistent?" Ren Xiaoyao's tone was calm, but with an unquestionable majesty.
Marshal Sima looked up at the young man before him, feeling a mixture of emotions. He had to admit that this young man possessed a composure and composure beyond his years. Perhaps, he could truly end this protracted war.
"What do you want?" Marshal Sima's tone was a little tired.
"I would like to ask the general to lay down his arms and rebuild our home with us." Ren Xiaoyao spoke with a sincere tone and a genuine look.
Marshal Sima sneered, "Rebuilding our homeland? That's easy to say! Whose fault do you think this war is?"
"War has no winners; it only brings endless pain and hatred." Ren Xiaoyao sighed. "I know the general has resentment and hatred in his heart, but is it really worth sacrificing more innocent lives to fill this burden?"
Marshal Sima fell silent. He looked at the battlefield littered with corpses, his heart filled with sadness.
Ren Xiaoyao continued, "General, I know you are a good general who loves his soldiers like his own children. You wouldn't want to see your soldiers sacrificed in vain, would you?"
Marshal Sima clenched his fists. His soldiers were all good brothers who had followed him through thick and thin, but now they were falling in a pool of blood one by one, and all this was because of his willful behavior.
"General, stop, for the sake of your soldiers and for the sake of all people in this world." Ren Xiaoyao's voice seemed to carry some kind of magic, causing Marshal Sima's originally firm heart to begin to waver.
After a long moment, Marshal Sima sighed, slowly stood up, and looked at Ren Xiaoyao with a complicated look in his eyes: "You, what do you want me to do?"
Ren Xiaoyao was delighted, he knew that he had made the right bet.
"I hope the General can..."
Ren Xiaoyao took a deep breath, suppressed his inner excitement, and said in a firm tone: "I hope the general can order your soldiers to lay down their weapons and end this meaningless war."
Marshal Sima heard this, a flicker of struggle in his eyes. He turned to look at his wounded and exhausted soldiers, feeling a mixture of emotions. He knew that continuing the fight would only result in more casualties, but he found it difficult to bow to a young man.
As if seeing through his thoughts, Ren Xiaoyao continued, "General, I know this is a difficult decision for you, but please believe me, I don't mean to humiliate you. I simply hope to end this war and restore peace and prosperity to the people."
"General, think about those dead soldiers and those innocent civilians. Can you bear to see them continue to suffer the ravages of war?" Deputy General Qian on the side couldn't help but persuade him.
Marshal Sima fell silent. His gaze swept over the cold corpses on the battlefield, and something deep within him seemed to collapse. He had thought he was fighting for his country, for honor, but in the end, what had he gained? Nothing but devastation, mountains of corpses and seas of blood.
"General..." Seeing the hesitation in Marshal Sima's eyes, Ren Xiaoyao knew his words had touched him, so he struck while the iron was hot, "You are a good general who loves his soldiers like his own sons. I believe that you do not want to see your soldiers sacrificed in vain, and even more so, you do not want to see this land plunged into war again."
Marshal Sima took a deep breath, as if he had finally made up his mind. He slowly raised his right hand, and his clenched fist slowly loosened and then dropped weakly.
Seeing this scene, everyone held their breath. They knew what this meant.
"Pass the order down, lay down your weapons and end the war." Marshal Sima's voice was hoarse and low, but full of power.
This order, like a spring breeze, blew across the entire battlefield. The originally tense atmosphere dissipated in an instant, replaced by the joy of surviving the disaster and the desire for peace.
When the news reached the royal city, the whole country celebrated. With the victory of the war, Ren Xiaoyao's name spread across the continent. He became a hero in people's hearts, a hero fighting for peace.
At the post-war celebration banquet, Ren Xiaoyao and Xia Lin stood side by side, looking at the lively scene in front of them, with a lot of emotions in their hearts.
"Do you remember the first time we met?" Xia Lin suddenly turned around and asked, with a cunning gleam in her eyes.
"Of course I remember," Ren Xiaoyao smiled slightly, "At that time..."
"At that time, you treated me as an enemy and almost attacked me." Ren Xiaoyao joked, recalling his encounter with Xia Lin when he first entered the game world. The two couldn't help but smile at each other.
"Who told you to be so sneaky at that time? I thought you were an assassin who came to kill the city lord." Xia Lin pretended to be angry, but her tone was full of nostalgia.
"Speaking of which, we were able to win this war thanks to the intelligence you provided." Ren Xiaoyao raised his glass and gestured to Xia Lin.
"I just did what I should do." Xia Lin smiled modestly, raised her glass and clinked it with Ren Xiaoyao.
The two exchanged a smile, their silence revealing everything. From their initial encounter, to their shared battles, to their current victory, their relationship had long since transcended the boundaries of ordinary friends.
The lively celebration banquet continued, with people singing and dancing to celebrate this hard-earned victory. However, just as everyone was immersed in the joy of victory, a mysterious figure quietly appeared in a corner of the celebration banquet.
He was wearing a black cloak that cast his entire body in shadow, making it impossible to see his face. He just stood there quietly, watching the bustling scene before him, a cold smile on his face.
No one noticed his arrival, nor the cold light that flashed in his eyes. He was like a ghost, silently sneaking into this joyous feast, casting a shadow over this victory.
"What's wrong?" Xia Lin keenly noticed Ren Xiaoyao's abnormality. She followed his gaze, but saw only an empty corner.
"Nothing." Ren Xiaoyao withdrew his gaze and shook his head, but a sense of uneasiness rose in his heart.
"Do you feel something is wrong?" Xia Lin asked. She knew Ren Xiaoyao and knew that he would not show such an expression for no reason.
"Maybe I'm worrying too much." Ren Xiaoyao forced a smile, trying to relax himself, but the uneasiness in his heart became more and more intense.
At this moment, the mysterious figure moved. He slowly raised his head, his eyes sweeping across the crowd, finally landing on Ren Xiaoyao and Xia Lin.
What kind of eyes were those! Cold, ruthless, and filled with murderous intent, as if they came from the Netherworld, making people shudder.
Ren Xiaoyao and Xia Lin exchanged a glance, their hearts filled with anticipation and vigilance. They knew the real test had just begun. And that mysterious man in black slowly approached them...
Ren Xiaoyao calmly squeezed Xia Lin's hand, offering silent encouragement. Xia Lin returned his hand, her eyes determined and fearless. The tacit understanding between them needed no further explanation at this moment.
The man in black approached, each step seeming to tread on Ren Xiaoyao's heart. The atmosphere was oppressive and suffocating. The surrounding noise seemed to be isolated, and the world was left with only the three of them.
"Hello, congratulations on your victory." The man in black finally spoke, his voice low and hoarse, like a whisper from hell.
Ren Xiaoyao calmly looked at the man in black, trying to find a flaw in him. However, the man in black was well hidden. His large cloak covered his figure, and his hood obscured his face, revealing only a pair of cold eyes.
"Who are you? What is your purpose here?" Charlene stepped forward and asked fearlessly.
"It doesn't matter who I am. What matters is that this war is far from over." The man in black said in a cold tone, with a hint of sarcasm, "Do you really think you have won? You are just deceiving yourself."
"What do you mean?" Ren Xiaoyao's heart sank, and an ominous premonition came to his mind.
"You will know soon." The man in black sneered, suddenly stretched out his hand, and threw the black ball in his hand into the air.
The sphere drew a black arc in the air, emitting a strange aura. Before anyone could react, the sphere suddenly exploded, turning into countless black points of light and dissipating into the air.
"Not good!" Ren Xiaoyao's face changed drastically. Realizing that the situation was not good, he turned around and shouted to the crowd, "Everyone, be on guard immediately!"
However, it was too late.
"Report——"
A rapid shout pierced the night sky as a soldier covered in blood stumbled into the celebration banquet, his voice trembling, "Enemy attack! Enemy country... The enemy army is approaching..."
Before he finished speaking, a raging fire broke out in the distant sky, and the shouts of killing shook the earth, like a death knell from hell, announcing the arrival of a new nightmare.
"How could this happen..." Xia Lin's face turned pale as she looked at everything in front of her in disbelief.
Ren Xiaoyao took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. A sharp light flashed in his eyes, "It seems that we have more important battles to fight..."
