Chapter 203 The Mysterious Number
Chapter 203 The Mysterious Number
As soon as Daigo finished speaking, a gust of cold wind blew by, and an eerie howling sound echoed throughout the space, as if it were some kind of evil whisper coming from the distant darkness.
"Daigo, something's getting weirder and weirder." Shinjo unconsciously hid behind Daigo, gripping his weapon even tighter.
Sensing the fear in the new town, Daigo teased, "What? You're afraid of vampire bats too?"
"They're not vampires..."
As he spoke, his gaze swept over the stone carvings and the huge bat image.
As they slowly ventured deeper inside, they discovered that these stone sculptures were not ordinary works of art. Each sculpture had a lifelike expression, as if it had been given life, especially the eyes. No matter where Daigo and Shinjo went, they felt as if they were being watched by them.
“These stone sculptures seem to be watching us,” Shinjo said in a low voice, his voice trembling slightly despite his efforts to remain calm.
Daigo did not respond; his attention was drawn to a mural located high up.
The mural depicts a group of people dressed in black robes surrounding a giant vampire bat, performing some kind of mysterious ritual. The bat's eyes gleam with a blood-red light, as if it is about to fly out of the mural.
“Shinjo, look at this mural. Perhaps the legend of the vampire isn’t entirely unfounded,” Daigo said, pointing to the mural.
Shinjo looked in the direction Daigo was pointing, his expression turning even more grim: "If that's really the case, then what is their purpose? And what is their connection to the missing police officer?"
Just as they were pondering, they suddenly heard a deep roar coming from the depths of the room.
The sound echoed in the empty space, making people's eardrums ache.
"What's that sound?" Xincheng looked around nervously.
"I don't know, let's go take a look." Daigo walked towards the direction from which the voice came without hesitation.
As they drew closer, they discovered a huge circular stone platform in front of them, with a stone coffin placed in the center of the platform.
The lid of the stone coffin was half-open, and the roar just now came from inside the stone coffin.
"Could there be some kind of monster lurking inside?" Shinjo swallowed hard, a strong sense of unease rising within him.
Daigo did not back down. He cautiously approached the stone coffin, trying to see what was inside.
Just as Daigo approached the stone coffin less than a meter away, a sharp scraping sound suddenly came from inside the coffin, as if something was rapidly scratching at the coffin wall.
Shinjo was so nervous that his breathing became rapid. He subconsciously raised the Victory Hyper gun in his hand, as if it could bring him a sense of security.
Daigo took a deep breath and continued to move forward slowly, his eyes fixed on the crack in the stone coffin. He reached out and lifted it up forcefully, but before he could see clearly, a black shadow darted toward the ceiling.
Fearing something might happen to Daigo, Shinjo decisively pulled the trigger, and a beam of light shot out and hurtled towards the shadowy figure.
After the shadowy figure was struck by the light, all the strange sounds that had been heard earlier vanished instantly.
Daigo and Shinjo looked closely and realized it was a toy used for pranks.
This toy is incredibly realistic, shaped like a small, bizarre bat, and covered in simulated fur. No wonder it looks like a monster in the dim light.
"This... how could it be a toy?" Shinjo looked bewildered, put away the Victory Hyper gun in his hand, walked forward and picked up the toy, examining it from all angles.
Daigo looked puzzled, scratched his head, and said, "Could it be that all those strange phenomena were deliberately created by someone using this toy to scare us? But who did it? And what was their purpose?"
Xincheng carefully examined the toy and noticed some minor wear marks on it, suggesting that it had been used many times.
A small note and a recording device were found inside the toy's abdomen.
“Daigo, this toy doesn’t look like it was just temporarily placed here. And the sounds we heard earlier, including the strange noises coming from the sarcophagus, were probably produced by this device in conjunction with this toy.”
Daigo nodded, agreeing with Shinjo's speculation: "So, there must be someone behind this. They deliberately created this terrifying atmosphere to lure us here; they must have some ulterior motive."
After saying that, Daigo asked in confusion, "But this note looks like a cell phone number."
"Keep an eye on it for me, I'll call and see!" Xincheng took out the communicator from his waist and dialed the number on the note.
The winning team's PDI has a special encryption effect, making it immune to fraud.
The monotonous beeping sound continued for a while in the microphone. In this quiet and slightly eerie space, each beep seemed to strike the heartstrings of Shinjo and Daigo, but there was no other response.
The long wait seemed to freeze time, with only hollow sounds echoing in the air, making Xincheng increasingly uncertain.
Just as Xincheng's patience was about to run out, his finger unconsciously moved towards the hang-up button, intending to give up on the call.
In an instant, the continuous beeping stopped abruptly, replaced by a slight electrical buzzing sound, and then the communication was connected.
Xincheng was taken aback at first, but then realized what was happening and quickly pressed the speakerphone button.
Accompanied by a small mechanical sound, the sound came from the loudspeaker.
The voice was clear and gentle, with a hint of doubt: "Hello, who are you looking for?"
Daigo and Shinjo's eyes widened instantly. They involuntarily looked at each other, their eyes filled with shock and confusion.
They never expected that the voice coming from the other end of the phone would be Lina's!
After a brief silence, Daigo said with a hint of teasing, "Shinjo, you can still dial the wrong number like this?"
Xincheng's face flushed red, and he explained in a flustered manner, "I'm so sorry, I pressed the wrong number." As soon as he said it, he began to wonder to himself, how could he have pressed the wrong number when he had carefully entered each digit of the number on the slip of paper?
Daigo frowned slightly, leaned closer to the communicator, looked at the note and then at the communicator in Shinjo's hand, and said in a low voice, "That's not right, this number is definitely on the note."
The first sound from the receiver was a soft "Huh?", which, though soft, carried a clear surprise, as if the person on the other end of the line had seen something unexpected.
Having learned her lesson from the previous incident involving Bizomo, Lina was clearly much more cautious. Her voice came through the microphone, tinged with caution and probing: "Are you Daigo and Shinjo?"
Daigo chimed in, "It's us. Aren't you on patrol?"
