Chapter 26 Lin Wan'er's Abnormality
Chapter 26 Lin Wan'er's Abnormality
The sisters treated her very well and taught her many things she didn't understand before. Unfortunately, this period didn't last long. Six months later, Li Heng completely lost patience with her and imprisoned her alone again.
Looking back now, Shen Li misses those days and the friends who came and went in the prison. She wonders if she will ever see them again in this life.
"I'm going to the Lin family to send them a visiting card." Shen Li was still thinking about seeing Lin Wan'er.
"Miss, Madam just sent a message asking you to return. She said that Master has learned of the news outside and wants to see you." Lian Qiao carefully added, "The messenger said that Master is very angry."
"Oh, I forgot about that." Shen Li earnestly instructed the two, "When we get back, don't say anything you shouldn't."
Peony was completely bewildered: "You mean?"
Shen Li looked at Lian Qiao, who seemed to understand but not quite: "What is your relationship with the Lord?"
“This.” Shen Li pointed to the unfolded blanket on the ground, feeling slightly guilty.
Sigrún has taught at the Iceland University of the Arts as a part-time lecturer since and was Dean of the Department of Fine Art from -. In – she held a research position at Reykjavík Art Museum focusing on the role of women in Icelandic art. She studied fine art at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts and at Pratt Institute, New York, and holds BA and MA degrees in art history and philosophy from the University of Iceland. Sigrún lives and works in Iceland.
"Then you can't keep it from Father, can you? The circumstances surrounding that confession are suspicious. How can His Majesty be allowed to implicate so many people based on so-called evidence of dubious origin?"
As Shen Zizai paced back and forth, he said with great sorrow, "If I were in court, I would surely remonstrate with His Majesty to the death, refusing to listen to the words of that treacherous Zhao Jing."
Shen Li was making tea, her movements unhurried and fluid.
She waited until Shen Zizai finished grumbling before saying, "So I'm telling you this, and then waiting to collect your corpse?"
"To rectify the court's morals, how can we be lenient with our own lives? This is what we, who have studied the classics, have done..."
"Now you know, when you summoned your daughter, the court assembly hadn't even started yet. Why didn't you go and offer your advice to the Emperor?" Although Shen Li knew it was impolite, she still interrupted her father.
She heard too many grand principles in her past life, and she doesn't want to hear any more in this one.
“It’s all because of Zhao Jing’s sudden move. It’s clearly a threat. If we push him too far, he will definitely use his assassins to frame Your Highness.” Shen Zizai sighed before saying, “With my temper, going there would only provoke him.”
"Father is wise." Shen Li asked, "Father, what do you think is the proper course of action now?"
"What else can we do but let Zhao Jing be smug for a while longer?" Shen Zizai said, then added, "I need to warn His Highness to be wary of Zhao Jing. There are probably people around him offering advice."
Shen Li raised an eyebrow slightly and asked, "Why do you say that, Father?"
“Even His Majesty can’t do anything about the civil officials, but this man has silenced them with a few dead bodies. If it weren’t for this lucky accident, he would be a great threat.” Shen Zizai’s face became more and more serious as he spoke.
"Father, you're overthinking it. In my opinion, the censors pushed them too far. Haven't the Flying Fish Guards done plenty of such brutal and horrific things?" Shen Li said casually.
Shen Zizai nodded, agreeing with his daughter's point, but he quickly realized that he had originally intended to reprimand Shen Li, so how did they end up talking about it?
"No, that's not what I'm talking about. It's you, you little brat..." He pointed at you, but for a moment he couldn't think of what to accuse you of.
"Father, please have some tea." Shen Li handed over a teacup with a sweet smile.
"I am thirsty." Shen Zizai took the teacup as if possessed, took half a sip, and then felt that he was being too unprincipled, so he put on a stern face and said, "Next time, even if you are worried about your father's life, you must not hide the news."
"Father, does the tea smell good?" Shen Li continued with a smile.
"Of course, the tea that Li'er brewed was..." Shen Zizai said, then widened his eyes again. Why do we keep going off-topic?
Shen Li quickly stood up from the chair and said, "Father, if you like it, please enjoy it slowly. I'm going to see Mother and my sister."
Before Shen Zizai could say anything, he saw Shen Li run out. He stood there stunned for a long time, unable to react. Was this his eldest daughter? Why did her lively and carefree personality suddenly seem so much like his second daughter?
This is not a good sign. Although Shen Yue is a bit mischievous and difficult to manage, her liveliness and activity are not exactly a problem.
But Li'er is different. When she becomes lively, those around her will be injured or even killed, and it may not just be one person's life.
It seems I still need to remind her to be extremely cautious.
Shen Li ate dinner at home before leaving. When she went out, the Gu family's carriage was already waiting there. She heard soft breathing sounds from inside the carriage as soon as she entered the door, and she subtly told her family not to see her off.
Sure enough, when she opened the carriage curtain, she saw Gu Chang'an sitting inside. He was wearing official robes and it was clear that he had just come from the yamen.
"Why don't you go inside? It's cold outside." Shen Li sat down next to him and took his hand; it was indeed cold.
She had already figured out the answer after asking the question: Gu Chang'an was not favored by her father, so she would be met with coldness if she went there.
"I came in a hurry, and I was worried that going in abruptly would disturb your family's peace." Gu Chang'an raised the corners of his mouth as he spoke, but the loneliness in his eyes was almost invisible.
But Shen Li knew him too well. He really wanted to be accepted by the Shen family, but he must have thought that was impossible.
She will do it.
Shen Li silently squeezed his hand, changing the subject: "How did things go at court today?"
“Early in the morning, the censors submitted a memorial accusing Zhao Jing of mishandling affairs and causing widespread panic. His Majesty reprimanded Zhao Jing in court, and the censors had no further objections.” Gu Chang’an added, “No one has raised the issue of the authenticity of the confession since then.”
Shen Li listened quietly. This was exactly what she expected. The emperor's reprimand was just giving the censors face. She was secretly overjoyed.
"I've used the unusual movements of the northern caravans as a pretext to have Zhao Jing focus on investigating the border situation. In addition, my intelligence network will also investigate," Gu Chang'an said.
Shen Li felt somewhat relieved. She knew that Zhao Jing was quite skilled in interrogation and intelligence gathering; in her previous life, Zhao Jing had also been recruited by Gu Chang'an.
With someone like that stepping up, Gu Chang'an was able to gradually wash the blood off his hands and rise to the ranks of the Six Ministries and even the final cabinet.
"Speaking of border affairs, Zhao Jing also told me an interesting story. Would you like to hear it, A-Li?" Gu Chang'an asked with a smile.
Shen Li nodded: "You can talk, I'm listening."
"A few days ago, Miss Lin from the General's Mansion also sent someone to ask him to inquire about the border situation, and gave him a large sum of money."
"Her?" Shen Li was genuinely puzzled now.
She cares about the border because she has been reborn and knows about the fierce battle three months later. Why does Lin Wan'er care?
