Chapter 300: Losing Control
Chapter 300: Losing Control
The following day started with them getting all the stuff they needed for the journey to work. Damian came to know that not everyone would take part in the journey.
Mary, June and Kai would not go. The journey was a dangerous one, and if too many people went, then they would need too many supplies.
"I don’t want my sister to go," Kai said to Damian, explaining the reason behind it. "I might not be able to protect her."
Damian understood the reason behind it, and he was not angry with Kai.
"No worries," he said, "I’ll make sure our plan works."
It meant a lot to Kai. He was a protective person who wanted to protect not only his sister, but everyone from the tenth floor. The cold coming their way would kill everyone if they stayed there, so for Kai, their plan had to work. Damian made sure to relax him.
They spent a few hours of the morning grabbing everything they would need, and then they went down the mountains way faster than before. Elrandir stopped the magical formations that denied flight, and Damian levitated everyone.
Well, not everyone. Elrandir knew a flight spell, so he didn’t need Damian’s help.
Elrandir was flying right beside Damian and the others. "You know how to fly? This is impressive."
He was shocked by Damian’s display of skill. Flight was a rare skill for humans, and most of them could not perform such an act. Yet, Damian was not only flying but making others fly too.
Damian looked to the side to stare at Elrandir, "Thanks, but I am more impressed by your skills. What was that formation that denied my flight?"
The two spent the whole way back to the mountain’s base talking about many things related to magic. Damian loved to hear the perspective of such an old and wise mage.
’I still have no idea if I can win against him. Magic is unpredictable,’ thought Damian.
Once they reached the mountain’s base — which took them only one hour — they worked together to place everything inside the carriage.
"We need to first go to a city so that Kai, June and Mary have a transportation method to return," Damian said.
That carriage would be used for their journey, but they couldn’t just let Kai, June and Mary walk back. It would take way more time, and would be dangerous too. So, they visited a nearby city, and there, they got a carriage for them.
Their goodbyes didn’t take long. After some brief words, both parties parted ways, and Damian was ready to continue his journey.
The first person driving the carriage was Cassia. Everyone else was inside the carriage, sitting on the couches.
"We need to reach a city with a port. From there, we will get a ship and sail to the islands," Elrandir said.
Damian was excited to sail to the islands. But he wanted to hear more about what Elrandir said about the place being dangerous.
"Well, the sea itself is dangerous," Elrandir said, "But the islands are the real problem. Powerful individuals who committed crimes go there to escape from the authorities."
They would have to face not only the dangerous sea, but also the islands packed with people who were criminals. That was what made the journey a difficult one, but one they needed to do.
"What will we do once we get there? Do you know of an island with Mana Stones we can use?" Damian asked.
Elrandir thought for a moment, "I know of a few, but we might need more than a few to power our spell. I won’t lie to you, but there’s a chance we’ll need to conquer the mines to get the Mana Stones."
It had been a long time since Elrandir traveled to that archipelago. He went there to grab a specific ingredient for his research fifteen years ago, and that’s when he came to know about the abundant Mana Stones there.
That information was one few people knew about. Not everyone went there, and those who did, often stayed or died when attempting to leave. Elrandir was able to go there and return because of his power.
Three days of constant travel was not enough to reach the city with the port. During the night, when they were all around a campfire to rest, strange things started to happen.
Elrandir was the first to go to bed — which was a tent, basically — and one by one they left the campfire and went to their tents.
Damian was the last one standing around the campfire, and that’s when he started to hear a creepy voice inside his head.
It was a hoarse voice, resembling a demon.
"Kill them, Damian. Kill them while they sleep. Don’t you want to taste their blood? Don’t you want to hear their screams of agony? Kill them! Kill, kill, kill!"
The voice got increasingly louder after each sentence, and it was starting to drive Damian mad. He didn’t want to stay near his friends, so he left during the night, and followed a secondary road leading to the forest.
Damian kept both hands on his head, trying to make the voice stop, but nothing seemed to work. It was getting worse by the second, and he had no idea what to do.
It was hard to think with the demonic voice hammering his head. After walking for fifteen minutes, Damian found a small village.
The place only had 7 houses. A simple place where a few farmers lived.
"Kill the farmers. Kill them! Drink their blood!" the demonic voice echoed inside his head.
It didn’t take long for a farmer to notice Damian’s presence. The farmer was a middle-aged man who was still taking care of his animals, despite being late, and he spot Damian moving toward them.
The appearance of strangers there was rare, so the man was a little suspicious.
"Excuse me," the farmer said, "Do you want any help?"
Damian couldn’t control it anymore. He aimed his palm toward the man, and the farmer’s head exploded. Brain parts flew everywhere.
It felt good.
