Chapter 4620 The Day of Brightest Light (Seventy-Nine)

"Shh!" Schiller gestured to the people behind him.

Strange looked at him incredulously: "I thought we were here to stop them."

“Yes, but rushing over there now might backfire,” Schiller said, pulling him back.

“You should at least give me a recap,” Strange couldn’t help but say. “What’s that pendant? Why is Lucifer angry?”

Schiller paused, glanced at Charles, and then said, "Could you please send him the background story, Professor?"

"Should I know?" Charles asked, somewhat puzzled.

"Come to the tower. I'll send it to you."

Soon, both Charles and Strange fell into deep thought. The Batmen clearly didn't need such a complicated method.

“Do you remember?” the main universe Batman said to Arkham Batman in the mental realm.

"what?"

“Mephisto,” said the main universe Batman, “he seems to have told us this story before.”

"Are you talking about a body double or something? What did he say again?"

Now. Beside the Origin Wall. The Justice League of the Multiverse stands to the left of the candied hawthorn, all looking at Lucifer and Anatoly with bewilderment. The Marvel members brought by Schiller stand to the right of the candied hawthorn, whispering about their backstories.

“I’ll go let them know I’m safe first,” said the main universe Batman. “And Professor, send me a copy of the backstory too.”

Soon, the Justice League of the Multiverse also fell into deep thought.

As it turns out, people's minds work incredibly fast when reading gossip. Before Anatoly and Lucifer had even exchanged two words, the multiverses on both sides had practically swallowed up the juicy gossip between them. And so, the situation began to become delicate.

Lucifer seemed lost in his own emotions, too preoccupied to read other people's minds. So much so that, even with both universes combined, he was the only one who hadn't recognized Anatoly.

“That’s the downside of arrogance,” the main universe Batman commented. “He doesn’t care about our thoughts, so he can’t learn anything from them.”

“I think this is their private matter, and we shouldn’t interfere,” said Wonder Woman from the main universe. “He might not want to be the butt of so many people watching. If he gets angry, we’ll all be in trouble.”

“Is that the point?” the main universe Superman said. “Our watching the show is definitely not the thing that will anger him the most right now. If Batman had been dead for so long without telling me, and then came back with a fake identity, I would be absolutely furious.”

"It seems Watson is quite gentle," Charles said softly. "I remember he fainted from excitement when he saw Holmes return, didn't he?"

"If only they could actually faint," Schiller sighed, trying to ignore his racing mind. "Any one of them would be fine."

“Not so optimistic,” Strange shook his head and said. “I think we should prepare for the Fallen Angels War.”

"You mean this?" The first Lantern Knight reached out and took the pendant down. "I won this while drinking with someone."

He gently bit the pronunciation of the word "someone," making it sound slightly heavier. But Lucifer remained lost in his own thoughts, recalling the events of that day.

"what is this?"

“It’s nothing,” Lucifer said, taking a deep breath. “Did Constantine give it to you?”

“Yes. He told me that it contains the aura of Satan’s wrath and can drive away angels. It seems unexpected that this thing appeared on me, Mr. Satan. Did he steal it?”

“No,” Lucifer said through gritted teeth, “it was probably left with him.”

"Oh, I see. I don't really need this." The first Genie handed the item over. "Please return it to its rightful owner."

Lucifer finally realized that he might have lost his composure. Even in his most destitute moments, he was the Lord of Hell; for him to come to someone and ask for something was really beneath him.

Moreover, people from both multiverses are watching. If he were to simply accept it, it would be nothing short of highway robbery.

Although the first Genie said the item was useless to him, it sounded like a complete excuse. It was like saying, "I can't beat you anyway, so if you want it, I have no choice but to give it to you."

But Lucifer couldn't find a suitable reason. He remembered that he had broken the glass while drunk. Although he had picked up all the pieces, there was a missing piece, which could be attributed to his own carelessness rather than Constantine stealing it. He disdained to frame someone unjustly.

Since it was I who dropped it, and Constantine picked it up and gave it to someone else, then my angry questioning seems too aggressive and really lacks manners.

Lucifer took a deep breath and said, "No. You keep it."

"Then can you tell me what this thing is? After all, Constantine isn't always that reliable, is he?"

"He told you what it was?" Lucifer glanced up instinctively, or perhaps it was out of politeness to look into someone's eyes while speaking. But when he saw those eyes, he felt something was off. This strange feeling lingered in his mind, yet it was a jumbled mess of thoughts, impossible to grasp at that fleeting inspiration.

“A shard of Satan’s goblet,” said the first Genie. “Forgive my curiosity, but I really can’t imagine what would make Satan smash his own goblet. Did the angels invade Hell?”

"How dare you think such a thing?" Lucifer's face turned cold. "Do you think I'm the kind of person who would throw away my cup in fear just because angels have invaded Hell?!"

“I don’t know.” Genius Number One shook his head and said, “It seems you really cherish this cup, otherwise you wouldn’t be so angry. I really can’t imagine what would have made you smash it.”

“I’m drunk,” Lucifer said.

"Is that so? I think alcohol is just a catalyst; it can never create thoughts themselves. Since this thing makes you unhappy, I'll return it to you. I don't want to get into trouble, Lord Satan."

The first Genie threw the pendant in his hand. Lucifer's eyes widened as he caught it, then stared coldly at the first Genie: "What you're doing doesn't seem like you're trying to avoid trouble. Are you trying to use me to establish your authority in front of the Justice League of the Multiverse? That's a foolish decision, Calamity."

“That should be the case. But given how much you're behaving like a British football hooligan, let’s forget it.” First Lantern shook his head.

"How can he be so confident?" Arkham Batman asked, somewhat puzzled. "Isn't he worried about being exposed at all?"

"His attitude was absolutely appalling," said Batman the Adventurer. "He faked his death to fool his friend, how could he humiliate him like that when he came back? It's really..."

"Shameless?" Batman from the main universe chimed in.

"Why is this happening?" Batman, the adventurer, genuinely didn't understand.

"Perhaps he really thinks he's not wrong, or rather, that the other person is more wrong?"

“Impossible,” said Arkham Batman. “Lucifer did nothing wrong; he was just fooled.”

"But, is he susceptible to being deceived?"

The Arkham Batman looked at the Main Universe Batman, who said, "The Universe Administrator has direct access to the backend data. The fact that he didn't recognize it proves he's never seen it. Not even now."

"But that only shows... he's not very diligent at work," Batman the Adventurer racked his brains. "It doesn't mean he doesn't care about his friends, does it?"

“Yes, that’s not quite right.” After all that, the main universe Batman finally threw out his argument: “If he’s not really a shameless person, then he’s doing it on purpose.”

“I don’t understand.” Arkham Batman shook his head.

"Why do I feel like the first Lantern is deliberately provoking Lucifer?" Strange asked. "He keeps pressing about the broken glass and even called him a football hooligan. Nobody can tolerate that, right?"

Schiller was also observing. After all, he wasn't just there for the spectacle. He was more interested in why Anatoly was keeping it from Lucifer, and how he had managed to do so.

It's important to know that Lucifer has access to backend data. Logically, he shouldn't have missed it. But he didn't. This proves he hadn't even looked at it. And even when he discovered the pendant on Anatoly, he never suspected anything.

This is likely because when Anatoly used Schiller's body before, he resembled Schiller. His current appearance is probably his original form. The difference in their appearances is quite significant.

Schiller's appearance leaned more towards mixed race, with some Eastern features. Anatoly, however, had a very standard Slavic appearance: high brow ridges, a prominent nose, and deep-set eyes. While not blond, his blue eyes were a trait typically found only in Caucasians. Physical appearance significantly influences demeanor and overall presence, which explains why Lucifer's features weren't immediately apparent.

As for why he didn't look at the data, Schiller thought it was probably due to Lucifer's arrogance. First, he believed that Anatoly's death meant he wouldn't easily change his mind. Second, he completely looked down on characters like the First Genie. While the First Genie was quite powerful, he was no match for Lucifer. Dealing with such characters didn't require the power of the cosmic administrator; even the power of an archangel or Satan would suffice. There was no need to bother looking at the data.

This is the downside of not working properly. Schiller thought that the doctor must know that Lucifer's shifts were so infrequent, and he hadn't thought to check the backend data for decades, which is why he dared to be so blatant.

As for his current attitude, it didn't seem like a genuine attempt to turn the tables; rather, it seemed like he was deliberately provoking Lucifer. And because he understood Lucifer so well, this tactic was quite effective. Lucifer absolutely could not tolerate such humiliation; his wings were fully spread, and this was the prelude to his attack.

However, Schiller couldn't let him make a move like that. Because if a fight broke out, Anatoly could stage a retreat like the original Lantern Man and slip away unnoticed.

Afterwards, Lucifer still wouldn't remember him as a defeated opponent, nor would he investigate what had happened. That won't do.

“Take me there,” Schiller said, turning his head.

Charles seemed a little hesitant, but Eric had already made his move. As he approached Lucifer, Schiller called out, "Lucifer!"

Lucifer's flapping wings froze. He turned to Schiller and said, "What are you doing here?"

"You know, arrogance will stop at nothing to save that lousy student. I need to figure out how to get Earth off the Origin Wall. And you, what are you doing here? Didn't you tell me you were fixing compatibility issues?"

Lucifer opened his mouth, clearly unsure how to answer. He hadn't planned to show up at all, so when Schiller messaged him to ask about the compatibility fix progress, he habitually replied, "Under repair." He hadn't expected to be caught skipping work.

Schiller's interruption calmed Lucifer down by half. He somewhat abruptly changed the subject: "How do you plan to bring Earth down?"
