Chapter 4606 The Day of Brightest Light (Sixty-Five)
Schiller took the necklace and put it away. Getting Anatoly to wear this thing wouldn't be easy, but he had to try, otherwise it would seem like he wasn't putting in the effort. The problem now was, where to find Anatoly?
He left in such a hurry, without saying where he was going. Everyone thought he was going to find Lucifer, but he didn't go to Heaven at all, and now nobody knows where he is.
Schiller thought about it carefully. The current situation was that Anatoly didn't want to go to Lucifer and ask him to take those unlucky guys down from the Origin Wall, so he had to find a way himself.
He's the first Lantern Knight, which means he can use the power of the Emotional Spectrum. But the problem is, the power of the Emotional Spectrum isn't quite enough; it might not be sufficient to pry the people off the Origin Wall. Before Anatoly left, he had already researched the power of the Seven Lanterns, and from his explanation, it was clear that it wouldn't work.
Actually, for someone familiar with the plot and setting, the best way to interfere with the Origin Wall is to find the Black Lantern power, as it was depicted in the original comics as the power that successfully helped those trapped on the Origin Wall escape, and it's also the easiest power to obtain. However, unfortunately, the Black Emperor himself is also implicated, making this path impossible.
There's no way to heaven, and no way to hell. Anatoly doesn't have many options left. Considering his past behavior, the doctor will most likely choose to use his strength to throw bricks, and blowing everyone up in one shot is the fastest way.
The cannon itself isn't difficult to manufacture; the cannonballs are the real challenge. Using materials from the real universe certainly won't work; we'll likely need to find a higher level of energy. While the emotional spectrum is of a high level, whether it can surpass the Origin Wall is uncertain; it's best to seek out extra-cosmic forces.
Looking at it this way, there's only one choice left. Schiller thought for a moment, then sent a message to Constantine in his universe.
How is Nyarlathotep doing lately?
Constantine replied with a question mark, followed by a series of replies: "I'm in the Battle Realm, and I haven't seen him in a long time. But if he doesn't show up, he should be fine..."
"Try to contact him."
Constantine apparently did as instructed, but after a while he replied, "He's not answering the phone; he must be busy."
“I advise you to go find him,” Schiller said. “Any later and you might lose your patron and source of inspiration.”
"what?!"
"Call me when you find it."
Schiller waited a while, and then Constantine called with a voice message: "What the hell? We can't get in touch with Nyarlathotep."
"Have you ever asked Brand why he came to Gotham?"
Does he need a reason to go anywhere?
“He came here to hide from his enemies,” Schiller told him. “Now it seems the enemies have come knocking on his door.”
"What?!" Constantine's tone was incredulous. "What enemy did Nyarlathotep have???"
Schiller hadn't figured this out before either. When Brand told him he was in Gotham to escape enemies, he didn't understand. Later, after learning Brand was Nyarlathotep, he was even more confused. Who were the Outer Gods' enemies? The King in Yellow?
However, things became completely clear after Anatoly learned that he had borrowed money from Nyarlathotep.
This might sound absurd, but the truth is, Anatoly was the kind of person who viewed borrowing as a way to identify easy targets. If he could borrow once, he could borrow ten thousand times; as long as he succeeded just once, he had another ATM. Five stars this time, he'd come back next time.
And Nyarlathotep, by all accounts, was the kind of Outer God who never hesitated to expend his energy to watch the spectacle. From the moment he became interested in Anatoly's plans and prepared to get involved, he stepped into a bottomless pit. Anatoly, a man who made the Outer Gods truly understand that "when you gaze into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you."
Beings like Nyarlathotep, including many demons and mystical entities, are like casinos—they don't fear you lending money, they only fear you not gambling; they don't fear how much you lend, they only fear you not being tempted. They generously lend money to gamblers to give them a taste of success, so they go all in and end up losing everything. This tactic has been effective for thousands of years.
However, Anatoly is clearly the kind of person who took money borrowed from Wall Street, first built nuclear bombs, then assassinated the president, and finally claimed that all the wolves of Wall Street were his angel investors.
Schiller had no idea how many of his creditors harassed Lucifer after Anatoly blew up Gotham. So much so that after Schiller returned to this world, he wasn't bothered by any of his creditors for a long time.
The feather shown when borrowing money isn't just a guarantee, it's more like a red name marker. And Lucifer is also like that kind of unreasonable and domineering parent—"If you don't lend him money, why would he gamble?"
Very few creditors could survive Lucifer's wrath, and Nyarlathotep was one of them. He was also clever, hiding in the place where Anatoli "died." Lucifer, reminded of the place, wouldn't easily venture there, thus avoiding being banished.
Therefore, the enemy Nyarlathotep was hiding from was actually Lucifer. No matter how powerful the Outer Gods were, Lucifer was still the biggest local tyrant. It was unwise to confront him head-on; avoiding his sharp edge was the best choice.
As for Lucifer's unreasonable behavior, that's just who he is. Even God couldn't outmaneuver him back then; no one could stop him. God created the entire universe, partly to please him. If Lucifer is unhappy, he can just throw a few toys around—who can stop him?
In conclusion, since Nyarlathotep is now silent, he's most likely been taken down by Anatoli. It seems the doctor believes that surviving Lucifer's powerful attack means there's still a lot to be gained. This is the real gold that survived the test of time; it would be a waste not to squeeze it dry.
Although we haven't seen Lucifer and Anatoly meet yet, it would be worthwhile to see Anatoly fight Nyarlathotep. Schiller asked, "When was the last time you contacted Nyarlathotep?"
“During his global book tour,” Constantine, who was also apparently investigating, said, “he acted normally, not like he was dying.”
“Then they must have run away after hearing the news just now,” Schiller said after thinking for a moment. “Can you still observe the stars?”
“I’m not that close to him; you’ll probably have to go find that Batman,” Constantine said.
Schiller knew he was referring to Batman, the one with all those tentacles who even had names for each of them. However, Schiller didn't know if he'd been hung on the wall yet; he hoped not.
He sent the other person a message, and they quickly replied with several exclamation marks, indicating that they weren't actually "hung" on the wall. He then sent a message asking, "Can I go to the main universe?"
He then explained, “The main universe’s Batman usually won’t let me go there because I’m too involved with the Outer Gods, and the power is somewhat corrupting. I don’t like going there either.”
“Come here,” Schiller said. “Remember to control your strength and come to this address to find me.”
Not long after, Batman arrived. This time, however, he didn't have tentacles, and apart from being a little pale, he looked no different from a normal person.
“Nyarlathotep is out of contact,” Batman the Fiend said. “The stars have disappeared, and I can’t see them at all. This is quite abnormal.”
Schiller understood. These Outer Gods certainly ran fast, and Nyarlathotep was quite loyal, not forgetting to take his homeland with him on his escape. But he still checked again: "Is there nothing left?"
Batman nodded and said, "Forget about observing the stars, even those ancient texts are unreadable; the text is all blurry. Some believers are experiencing amnesia and have completely forgotten the name of their master."
"They evacuated quite cleanly," Schiller remarked. But he quickly realized something else: it wasn't just DC that had Outer Gods; Marvel had them too, and the stars they observed were the same—projections of the same group of Outer Gods in different universes, with the same destination seen along the projection.
So Schiller sent a message to Star-Lord, Peter Quill, in the universe where Greed resides.
"Are you there? Want to take a look at the stars?"
What is Stellaris? Is it a newly released game?
"Are you awake?" Star-Lord's voice message came through as soon as Schiller sent the message.
You messaged me at 3 a.m. asking if I was awake? What do you think?
"You can still receive my messages at 3 a.m.? There must be a lot of new games released recently, right?"
Star-Lord was speechless. He said, "What exactly do you want?"
"Go outside and look at the stars."
"Are you crazy? Why would I... Oh, these stars? What's wrong with them?"
"Go and see for yourself, would I ever harm you?"
"Haven't you hurt me enough already?" Star-Lord said, but you could hear his footsteps heading towards the door. He had a special connection with the stars; he could see deep into them with a single glance.
He was silent for a long time, then said, "What the hell? I didn't see anything. Where did they go?"
He paused for a moment before continuing, "Normally, let alone staring at the stars, if I just look up at night, I can hear them whispering in my ear and constantly sending me group chat invites, and I can't even block them. What's going on today?"
"Congratulations, you're about to have a long period of peace and quiet. Look at the stars more often."
After hanging up the phone again, Schiller sent another message to Doctor Strange: "Any news about the Eye Demon?"
"What?" Strange looked half-asleep. "Who did you say?"
His phone rang soon after. Schiller said, "Do you know where the Eye Demon is?"
Strange immediately became alert and asked, "What do you want with him?"
"Something might have happened to the Outer God. Go look for him."
After hanging up the phone, Strange immediately went to search. Considering he was now the Speaker of the Interstellar Council, he mobilized the Interstellar Council and the Sanctum Sanctorum to search for a long time, but found nothing.
Unable to find him in this universe, he contacted other multiverses. Doctor Strange in those other multiverses also failed to find him. Even more coincidentally, a Beholder from one universe was invading Earth, presumably to kill the Ancient One, but halfway through the attack, the Beholder escaped.
Some of the strangest beings from other universes have ventured into the depths of the stars, only to find that they can no longer see anything when they return. Either the stars have changed their names, or they've simply disappeared.
Having received the news, Schiller confirmed that the stars had indeed temporarily disappeared, meaning they were no longer projecting onto these two great worlds. Unless one could directly travel to Lovecraft's or other Cthulhu universes created by horror authors, it seemed impossible to contact the Outer Gods.
Anatoly probably wouldn't go straight to the Thrillers universe. Schiller immediately thought of who to call. He dialed Professor X's number in the Greed universe.
"Hey, Professor? How's Reynolds?"
"Who?"
"Robert Reynolds, owner of the power of a million stars."
"Him? He's been practicing controlling his energy in a special controller... Holy crap?! Where is he?! Eric!!! Eric!!!!"
