Chapter 4212 A Guide to Wandering the Galaxy (19)
Two muscular figures walked out of the portal one after the other. The one in the lead turned to the one behind him and said, "You better behave yourself. This isn't Earth. If anything goes wrong, no one can save us!"
"Okay, okay." I don't know what benefits that old devil promised you, but you're working so hard for him and insist on dragging me into it. I've never even driven an excavator before, and you want me to work on an alien construction site..."
"I'll say it again, we're not here to work. There might be some malicious aliens infiltrated the construction site, and we're here to catch spies."
"To put it bluntly, isn't it still just working for someone else?"
These two men were none other than the brothers Johnny and Danny. Mephisto's so-called "solution" was to bring them into the construction site and capture the dangerous man. You couldn't say it was a bad idea, because they were indeed quite capable fighters—they were two Ghost Riders, after all. But clearly, neither of them wanted to do the job.
First, they changed into work clothes and put on safety helmets in the preparation room, and then followed the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to their posts. Their job was simple and boring: sitting in a high chair and watching anti-gravity cranes build walls.
They sat in opposite corners, one in the southeast and the other in the northwest, both able to see each other and the movements below. This was clearly a deliberate arrangement, so that if anything went wrong, justice could be served immediately.
The two sat there all day without finding anything wrong. The manager Mephisto had warned them to keep a close eye on didn't even show up today. That evening, Danny prepared to go home to sleep, but Johnny stopped him.
"Don't forget why we're here. What if this guy makes a move tonight?"
Danny sighed and said, "If he doesn't make a move, are we just going to stay here and waste our time with him?"
"This is Mephisto's doing; he won't lie to us. The fact that he chose to send us here now means he's probably getting impatient and will make his move soon."
“You seem to trust him quite a bit.” Danny had been critical of him, but couldn’t argue with Johnny. So the two found a corner and squatted down.
The construction site was filled with all sorts of things, and when the two of them weren't in their evil spirit mode, they looked like ordinary humans, not very conspicuous. If they were wearing dark clothes and squatting there, they would be hard to spot.
They'd been squatting there until midnight, and both were getting sleepy. Johnny figured nothing would happen that night, so they walked around the construction site, heading back to their dorm to sleep. But just then, they spotted a furtive figure, seemingly passing right through the middle of the construction site.
The two immediately perked up. Johnny gestured to his brother, and the two of them, one in front of the other, bent over and tiptoed, quietly approaching the figure.
In order to catch him in the act, the two did not pounce on him immediately, but hid behind a pile of bricks to see what he was going to do.
The two initially thought this guy was going to cause trouble, like damaging the machinery or even planting explosives in the foundation. But after waiting for a while, they didn't see him do anything; instead, he was kneeling there fiddling with something.
After fiddling around for a while, the man seemed to have finished and was about to leave. Johnny gave Danny a look, and Danny turned and followed the man, while Johnny went to check where he was fiddling with his things.
That wasn't where the foundation was located, but rather next to it, in a small crack in the rock. Johnny reached in and rummaged around, then touched something hard and cold. He used a bit of force, pulled it out, and saw it was a black box.
Johnny was a little confused, but he was also afraid that it was a bomb or something, so he simply transformed into Ghost Rider and put the thing in his pocket.
Meanwhile, Danny quietly followed behind the guy, but the guy was very alert and spotted him almost immediately. With a "zzzt" sound, a laser beam shot over.
Danny gasped. This guy was carrying a weapon illegally! Something was definitely fishy!
He wasn't one to back down from trouble. With a low growl, flames instantly engulfed his entire body, and the flames dancing in the skull's eye sockets grew even brighter.
"You are guilty!"
The alien screamed in agony, and flames began to engulf its body. But Danny suddenly remembered that the key to catching a thief is to catch him red-handed. If he burned the person right there, not only would he not get any information, but the illegally carried weapons would also be burned, which would be a real problem.
So he abruptly stopped the trial halfway through and withdrew the evil flames. But these weren't ordinary flames that could be extinguished so easily. The evil flames targeted the souls of sinners, and even just a brief flare was enough to make the alien seem to lose his soul, collapsing straight down.
Danny took a deep breath; he knew he'd made a mess of things. But it was too late now, and he could only drag the man towards his brother. Johnny, seeing the man's condition, knew that Danny had probably gone too far, burning him senseless.
He glanced at the horizon; it was almost dawn, and he couldn't afford to waste any more time. So he quickly erased the traces—thankfully, Ghost Rider wasn't too gory—he just hastily cleaned up his footprints, then dragged the unconscious alien toward the edge of the construction site.
They arrived at a place where ordinary workers wouldn't usually go, and Johnny took out his phone to make a call. Danny quickly stopped him, saying, "You're not going to tell Mephisto, are you? We messed up this job; if you tell him, he'll definitely dock your pay!"
"Do you think I'm stupid? Of course I'm not going to tell him. I'm not going to give him the chance to dock my pay... Hello? Dr. Schiller? Oh yes, we've run into some trouble here, could you come pick us up?"
Ten minutes later, a small spaceship landed on the planet. Schiller stepped out of the spaceship, looked at the alien lying on the ground, and asked in surprise, "What happened to him?"
“I was burned by the evil spirit’s flames.” Danny held out his hands in front of him and said, “I swear, it really was just for a few seconds. Their souls are so fragile…”
Schiller walked forward somewhat helplessly to check the situation, and then he discovered that the alien's physical body was undamaged, but its soul had been mostly burned away. Even God couldn't save it in this condition.
“But we found this.” Danny quickly handed the laser gun used by the aliens to Schiller, and Johnny also handed him the small black box.
Schiller looked at the box and said, "This seems to be some kind of electromagnetic interference device, not bad haul. As for this person... well, let's take him back to the tavern first."
Schiller originally intended to bury the body on the spot, but he knew that some races implant chips in their bodies, and he didn't know if any of the manager's races had come over. It would be troublesome if the body were found by following some chip or biosignal.
The Johnny brothers loaded the body onto the spaceship and flew back to the pub. It was their first time there, and after looking around, they said, "It's kind of like one of those pubs in TV dramas. Can I have a beer?"
"Go get it yourselves behind the bar." Schiller nodded at them and dragged the body to the backyard.
Upon reaching the backyard, they encountered Pamela, who was carrying a large bag of soil. The two exchanged glances. Pamela said somewhat awkwardly, "Dr. Schiller, I must say you're being a bit too reliant on conventional methods. You can't attribute the fact that Merkel didn't kill all the plants in your garden to the fertilizer you found; it doesn't do any good for plant cultivation."
“I didn’t specifically look for fertilizer for you,” Schiller said, somewhat helplessly. “We just happened to run into this. Besides, you should have a scientific spirit. How do you know Gotham’s soil is so special? Isn’t it because it contains a much higher concentration of special nutrients than other cities?”
The two stared at each other. Pamela looked at the body, then at the ground beneath her feet, and said, "Okay, you have a point. Let's try it. We'll dig a hole there, you throw the body in, and then fill it with dirt."
"No, it'll rot and smell, which can't affect the tavern's business. Has the underground project at the Celestial Venerable's place already started? What do you think about us digging a cellar?"
“What about the sunlight? Ah, that makes sense. The sunlight here might not be beneficial for plants. We might as well just get some ultraviolet lamps from Earth.” Pamela patted her head and said, “Go call the engineering team, I’ll go back to Earth to get the tools.”
Schiller nodded. He temporarily hid the body on the spaceship and then went to find the Grandmaster. To be fair, the Cosmic Elders were indeed quite capable; in just a few days, they had already dug through the Earth's crust, creating a remarkably large space beneath.
When the Grandmaster heard that Schiller was going to dig a cellar, he didn't take it seriously at all, since the tavern's underground area was already part of his plans. With a wave of his hand, he simply dug a passage from the hole to the tavern's underground area, creating a large underground space.
Hearing that they were going to build an experimental field, the Grandmaster even artificially divided it into several levels and installed an elevator. After it was completed, Pamela also brought the ultraviolet lamp.
Schiller had never seen this type of ultraviolet lamp before, so he asked, "What is this? Which Earth are you going back to?"
“Of course it’s my own,” Pamela said. “This thing is a modified bat lamp, and it’s much more powerful than yours. I know you have artificial suns here, but those aren’t very safe. If a plant jumps up and breaks the protective shield, then everything will be over.”
Schiller didn't want to argue with her about this absurd assumption. Together, they laid the soil on the top layer of the cellar and then buried the body inside. Pamela sighed helplessly, "It's going to stink here now; I need to go back and get another protective suit."
“It’s just a corpse,” Schiller shook his head and said. “It will smell a bit, but not this bad. I’ll get someone to install a high-powered air purifier here.”
So the two went back to their own business. They were busy until the next evening. Fortunately, the Johnny brothers stayed at the tavern to help, so nothing too serious happened.
The air purifier was installed, the protective suits were brought, and Pamela began her work. Schiller returned to the tavern upstairs. By this time, the night shift had ended, and several drunken men staggered out.
Schiller tidied up the bar and prepared to go back to rest. Just as he was about to go upstairs, the phone rang.
"Hello? Dr. Schiller? Something terrible has happened! A spaceship has crashed into an asteroid. Can you come and take a look?"
