Chapter 4105 MU: The Superbody Incident (182)
Greed spat out a mouthful of water, then coughed violently for a long time, almost choking himself to death.
"This is what you call 'there's nothing to hide'?!"
"There's really nothing to hide. Stop pretending. Are you some kind of pathetic little thing who would be upset by the end of the world?"
"But this is too much... Tell me how it was destroyed first."
“The two countries went to war,” Anatoly shrugged. “There was a little skirmish at sea. One of the men opened fire without permission from his superiors, and his subordinates faithfully carried out his orders. Then it escalated into an accidental clash, and things spiraled out of control.”
Greed suddenly remembered that the plane that had led him through this time travel had apparently been destroyed in a barrage of artillery fire. Now he knew where the artillery shells had come from.
Anatoly seemed to read his mind and said, "You died relatively early. To be precise, I sent you back relatively early, so you don't know what happened afterward. It was a brutal fight."
Nuclear war?
“Of course. This is the only outcome in the end.” Anatoly lowered his eyes and said, “Nurse Chen’s youngest son went to the battlefield. I pulled him back when he was still alive, but his body was already dead and could not remain in his original world, so I had to send him to you.”
“No wonder,” Greed shook his head and said, “Didn’t you do anything to stop this war?”
"That's the problem. I've tried pretty much everything, but it seems unavoidable. After doing some research, I realized it might be a problem between the two of us."
"What do you mean?"
“Our back-and-forth travel caused the stability of that universe to drop rapidly. Once stability drops, chaos will follow, and certain nodes will slide toward doom. In my investigation, in most universes, the commander who chose to fire was stopped by his subordinates, but not in our universe. And so the war broke out.”
“I tried going back in time to kill that commander, or pretending to be his subordinate to stop him, but it was all in vain. If every subsequent point in time goes in the wrong direction, then world war is inevitable.”
Greed covered his forehead and said, "But that's not what I wanted to do. Isn't this God's problem?"
"Then guess why DC's God is hiding?"
"Didn't he go to find his son?"
"You really think he values Gabriel that much? If that were the case, he wouldn't have let Gabriel go in the first place. He was trying to avoid me."
"Then why is he unwilling to help?"
"It's probably because I beat up his favorite son back then, borrowed money all over the universe in his name, and finally fired a shot that hit the center of the stars, attracting an Outer God. I then faked my death and ran away, and ended up bringing you here."
"...Then it's normal that he's unwilling to help."
“I think it might be because he has his own difficulties,” Anatoli said. “When the world’s stability declines, you have to find a way to make up for it. If you want to get the power to mend the sky, you have to rob Peter to pay Paul. As the boss, he still has to be fair on the surface and can’t be too biased towards any one universe. It’s obviously not appropriate for him to do this, but it doesn’t matter to me.”
"So that's why you've gathered so much power. How's your recovery going?"
“I have no clue,” Anatoly said. “I’m not the administrator of the universe, how would I know where the loophole is? Besides, even if I’ve gathered so much power, it’s just a drop in the ocean for that universe. So I’ve come back and am looking for other ways.”
Greed thought for a moment and said, "Can Lucifer help?"
"He only has authority in that one world; there is only one supreme ruler who transcends all worlds: God. Even if he tells me the method, I cannot do it unless He intervenes personally. Our life forms are fundamentally different."
"This is a bit of a problem," said Greed. "Since repairs aren't an option, could we perhaps move to a different house?"
"That's what I think too, but it's not that simple. Life and the universe are like a radish and a hole, each with its own place. Even if you wipe out the entire universe and then migrate people there, you still can't replace the original life."
"What if we create our own universe?"
“The energy required is astronomical,” Anatoly said. “Don’t be fooled by those mutants who claim they can create universes; they’re creating pocket universes. If the original universe is a villa, then a pocket universe is at most a flowerpot. Its development potential is too limited, not even comparable to the original house.”
"Hiss..." Greedy took a breath and said, "I'm wondering why I deleted my memories in the first place. It's not that hard to accept, there's always a way. Deleting this memory might actually delay the progress."
"I don't know about that. Maybe you have a way, but you can't have any memories, otherwise this method won't work."
"If you can't do anything, what can I do?"
The two fell silent. After a pause, Greed asked, "There's one more question: where did that comic come from?"
"what?"
"I read those comics when I was a kid."
"Of course I found it for you."
"But some comics weren't published before the plane crash, were they?"
“I found those from other universes. After all, that’s your home, and you’ll have to go back sooner or later, so of course I’d find you more information.”
"Can you travel between different universes?"
"Of course. I can travel to different points in time. However, it's difficult for me to interfere with the past; history will take a detour, and the final result will remain the same. But it's still possible to go back and take a look."
"Are you really just an ordinary soldier?"
“Of course. I just had a bit of a lucky encounter later on,” Anatoly said with a smile. “You’d never guess who I am.”
Greed narrowed his eyes; he knew Anatoly's smile all too well. It was the same smile Anatoly always wore when he told him about a "big surprise," and those surprises usually brought more shock than joy. The last time was on his birthday; Anatoly had made him a vodka-flavored cake. Back then, he'd been curious, one daring to make it, the other daring to eat it, and in the end, they both got a scolding from the nurse.
Greed began to ponder. From the questions Anatoly had asked at the beginning, he knew that the other party might have been watching him all along, meaning they couldn't be too far away. If it wasn't Brand, but actually Nyarlathotep, he would definitely suspect Brand.
Could it be Anna? But then I thought about it and realized it was impossible. Despite being Soviet, Anatoly's math skills were actually quite poor; otherwise, he would have become a mathematician long ago. His math level wouldn't be good enough to teach university-level mathematics. Besides, Anna doesn't drink alcohol, which completely rules out her as a possibility.
Who else? Greed racked his brains for a long time, but couldn't think of anyone around him who resembled Anatoly. Those he was close to were either famous superheroes or had personalities completely different from Anatoly's; it was almost impossible.
After eliminating the closest group, which is probably those who are neither too close nor too far away, those who can be noticed but not frequently contacted, greed begins to eliminate them one by one, but still cannot find a suitable target.
Then he realized that his method of elimination might be flawed, because if anyone around him had acted strangely, he would have noticed it long ago; it was impossible for him to only realize it today. So he started by examining the events themselves, thinking about whether there were any unsolved mysteries in his experiences, which might be the result of Anatoly's interference.
After thinking for a long time, he suddenly unearthed a very inconspicuous fragment from the depths of his memory.
Years ago, Sinestro, the Yellow Lantern, suddenly arrived on Earth, claiming that he had discovered the Lanterns' conspiracy. He claimed that the little blue man was not the creator of the Emotion Spectrum, nor even the discoverer, but had been controlling the Emotion Spectrum and forcing the Lanterns to do things for them.
According to the normal timeline, Sinestro hadn't yet defected from the Green Lantern Corps at that time. After some questioning, he learned that someone had told him the truth beforehand, ultimately leading to his premature defection and the early formation of the Yellow Lantern Corps. As for who that person was, there's still no clue.
Schiller had a suspicion at the time, thinking that it might be the work of the first Laughing Man. He had just removed the Laughing Egg from Bruce's body, and he instinctively felt that the two things might be related.
It was later confirmed that in Schiller's universe, the dangerous entities became eggs because Anatoly had destroyed the primordial dark side of that universe, thus sealing these dangerous entities away. Could it be that Anatoly was the one who told the Sinestro Lanterns the truth beforehand?
"You're not the first Genie, are you?!" Greed raised his voice.
"Hahahaha, you didn't expect that, did you!" Anatoly laughed happily. "At that time, I thought you would investigate. After all, you had just discovered that the dark side was sealed, and Sinestro went to look for you. You would definitely connect the two things, guess that it was the first Lantern Man who did it, and come to find me. But I waited for a long time and you didn't move."
“That’s arrogance,” said Greed. “We shouldn’t have let him go in the first place. If I had gone, we would have met up long ago.”
“There’s no way around it. If you go, Bruce will be beaten to death by the Joker you’ve turned into,” Anatoly said, shaking his head.
Greed choked on his words. The initial reason for sending Pride was that he was considered strong and adept at handling a dangerous place like Gotham. However, Pride's inertia was too great; he had absolutely no motivation to investigate. Unless the villains came looking for trouble, even if there were clues, he wouldn't bother to investigate. This resulted in him and Anatoly meeting more than a decade later.
"But how come you're the first Lantern Knight?" Greed asked.
“Just like you did,” Anatoly said. “First gain a certain status, then modify your origin story. Besides, the origin story wasn’t changed much; I was originally a traveler from another world.”
Greed then remembered that the origin story of the first Genie was actually quite vague; the comics described him as "from an unknown future." That's right, just that one sentence—no mention of his hometown or the origin of his superpowers. Now it seems Anatoly couldn't come up with anything, right?
"What about the original Genie from other universes..."
"Actually, it's all my fault. Whenever there's a big event, I have to rush around and don't have much time to actively seek you out. Even so, sometimes I still miss it. Actually, when Batman and Darkseid in the main universe conquered Oa, I should have been in the Blue Man's cage, but that coincided with the rise of the Third Legion in another universe, and I had to go and let them extract energy, so I missed it. But it's okay, Batman probably thinks the Blue Man is too cunning and locked me up somewhere else. I can just guide him to dig me out someday."
Greedy, unable to resist covering his forehead, said, "So the first Genie I saw in the comics is also you? But why is the real universe a comic book in another world?"
