Chapter 3937 MU: The Superbody Incident (Seventeen)
After hanging up the president's call, a cold glint flashed in Schiller's eyes. He pulled the soaking wet Natasha up and said, "I'll make a few more trips to get you to the nearby island. To avoid alerting them, there probably won't be a large-scale rescue. You can leave with the partygoers the next day."
The agents didn't complain. When on field missions, anything can happen. This time was pretty good; at least Schiller arrived quickly, not keeping them waiting too long.
Schiller first took Natasha back to the shore in the Metropolis by speedboat. The others could wait until tomorrow morning, but she couldn't. The CIA was here on a mission.
"So it destroyed my plane to use me to hold you back, preventing you from contacting Doom and Stark?"
"Yes. Those two scientists are important, but they're safe in the Batcave for now. You're different. The president will choose to save you first. No one else is safe, so I'll have to handle it. That means I can't possibly get back to Gotham to find those two scientists tonight."
"But why tonight? What happened at the Bat Cave?"
"It's unclear at the moment. Batman may be in contact with them, but I suspect these two guys made contact with the cyber life on their own initiative, and may even have done something to it."
"But what does that have to do with you?"
“I’m the only one in contact with them. I have to buy and deliver whatever they need. If I get bogged down, I won’t be able to deliver anything tonight, which will delay their research progress for one night. Maybe the cyber life forms can use this opportunity to iterate on some of the weaknesses they’ve been exploited.”
"Are they really that good?" Natasha asked, frowning. "They've already found out what's going on in such a short time?"
"You might think that Batman has been working for so long, but his achievements are not as great as theirs in a few days. But don't forget, Batman has a huge empire to manage, so he simply can't concentrate on technology. And Doom and Stark together represent at least half of the intellectual resources in their universe. Taking down a cybernetic life form isn't that difficult."
"Looks like it'll be done soon?"
"It's not that optimistic. The key is that electronic life has evolved into radio wave life. Capturing these things is no easy task. Completely eradicating them is even more of a pipe dream. Perhaps their actions this time are simply to gather more information."
"That's true. But it seems the electronic life form didn't fare well either; choosing to stall you might be a last resort."
"The fact that it's the other way around, instead of us, is a sign that the situation is starting to turn around. I think it's not just our universe; other universes will also see their situations gradually improve after receiving support from heroes from another world."
"Captain and Stephen went to their main universe together. I'll send him a message to check on things, hopefully nothing else has happened... What? Schiller crashed too?!"
In the main universe, Schiller stood on the wing of an airplane, looking out at the boundless Atlantic Ocean, and sighed silently.
A day earlier, Strange, who was standing in the center of the Batcave looking at the globe, sighed and said, "You can choose fully concealed pillars, but the difficulty of construction and subsequent concealment and maintenance is on a completely different level from ordinary temples. Are you sure you really want to do it this way?"
“You can’t expect all nations to be of one mind,” the main universe Batman said. “In fact, it’s a miracle your Sanctuary wasn’t attacked by those crazy rebels. That certainly wouldn’t work here.”
"It's as if you're still fighting in World War II."
“That war has never ended,” the main universe Batman said, shaking his head. “The world situation is unstable, and small countries are in complete chaos. Rather than trying to prevent them from daring to touch the Temple, it’s better to just keep them from knowing about it.”
Strange could only sigh and say, "Fine, it's your universe, you call the shots. But if it's just me, I can't complete such a large project in a short time. Even if you have enough energy to cast concealment magic, someone still needs to do it. Gather the mages of your universe."
He turned to look at the main universe's Batman, who was also looking at him. They stared at each other, wide-eyed. Strange slapped his forehead and said, "Oh, right, your universe doesn't have any proper sorcerer organizations. What about those scattered individual sorcerers? Surely you can find a few willing to work for you, and with decent skills, right?"
“You’ll have to talk to Constantine about this,” the main universe Batman said, turning around. “I don’t know where he’s been lately. Wait a minute, I’ll get back to you soon.”
At Gate 125 in Katsowar, the main universe's Batman knocked on the door. The door opened quickly. Schiller stepped aside to let Batman in, then asked, "How's it going? The magic defense network is progressing well, isn't it?"
The Batman from the main universe shook his head and said, "I can't communicate with governments like they do in other universes and establish official temples. There will definitely be people who try to sabotage me. The only way to build a magical defense network is to hide it, but that would require too many people. I wanted to ask if you know where Constantine is."
Schiller shook his head and said, "If nothing unexpected happens, we can find him in the Prison of Spirits. But the problem is, nobody knows how to get in there. He probably didn't intend for anyone to find him."
“Alright. Let me think of any other mages I can contact. Miss Zatara probably won’t work; she’s always traveling the world and performing on the streets, so it would be difficult to pinpoint her location in a short time.”
“I do have an idea,” Schiller said. “Do you know the Master of the Night?”
The main universe's Batman nodded, then said, "You mean go to the Forgotten Bar to find them?"
"Yes. Although Master Dark Night is not a traditional mage, he can travel to the Maiar world, where there are many magical creatures that might be of help."
"I remember now, your alternate world of Gotham was built with the help of magical creatures, wasn't it?"
“I suppose so,” Schiller said after thinking for a moment. “Perhaps they have a way to contact Constantine.”
"I have no doubt about the skill level of the mages Constantine can summon, but as for their character..."
“He won’t cause trouble at this time,” Schiller shook his head and said. “The establishment of the magical defense network is good for him. At least his creditors can no longer find him with impunity. If he causes any trouble outside, he only needs to return to Earth, and they can only watch helplessly. So as long as he knows about this, he will definitely introduce you to reliable mages and will not let them cause trouble.”
"Are you sure he won't try to sneak in his own ideas within the magic defense network?"
“He’d have to be at that level,” Schiller said. “As far as I know, most Constantines have practically no knowledge of defensive spells. He’s not the kind of person who relies on stacking shields to protect himself, otherwise he wouldn’t be making himself look like a monster every day. And the magical defense network that Strange possesses is far more complex than you think. If your universe weren’t so special, he wouldn’t have come in person. Your Earth’s magical defense network is probably the most robust in all the multiverses.”
The main universe's Batman sighed softly and said, "Of course. But with special status comes greater responsibility. I need to resolve this trouble quickly and then go support the Dark Multiverse. The Spider-Men might be able to save people, but they'll probably have a hard time ending the chaos completely. I need to hurry."
Schiller nodded. He knew that the Batmen ultimately decided to send Spider-Man to aid the Dark Universe mainly because they valued the pure and kind hearts of the Spider-Men. They were almost untouched by dark forces, and even if they couldn't offer much help, they could at least save some people.
However, there are many Dark Universes, and even if Spider-Man had the time, he wouldn't get many in a single universe. Saving lives would keep them busy enough; they wouldn't have time to trace the origins. To kill the game at its source, it would have to be Batman.
“I’ll go to England,” Schiller said. “I’m ashamed to say I haven’t been of much help before. Since you can’t leave, I’ll go to England to find the Master of Darkness for you. He should be happy to help.”
“That’s great, Doctor,” said the main universe Batman. “But don’t say anything like that. Just the fact that you’re here gives me a lot of confidence.”
So Schiller set off. He first returned Nimosini to Gordon, packed some of his personal belongings, bought a plane ticket, and flew to England.
He had considered the possibility that the electronic lifeform could control the plane, but the electronic lifeform had no motive to target him and had never done anything to him. Schiller never expected that, just to delay his trip, the electronic lifeform would simply throw the plane into the Atlantic Ocean.
Fortunately, it seemed it didn't intend to kill Schiller, but instead forced the plane to make an emergency landing in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Everyone slid down the slide safely and is now sitting in a life raft.
Taking advantage of the flight attendants' inattention, Schiller climbed from the nearest life raft onto the aircraft. Although he was no longer allergic to the sea, he still wanted to get as far away from the ocean as possible.
The crash was brief, and the plane hadn't sunk. Schiller was able to use this opportunity to survey his surroundings. If no rescue arrived after a while, he would have no choice but to call Lucifer.
Just as Schiller was hesitating whether to call Lucifer sooner to prevent him from complaining later, "Why didn't you call me to save you right away?", he suddenly saw a moon rising in the clear blue sky.
A hazy moonlight shone down, and Schiller looked up slightly, only to see a face exactly like his own. The hooded figure seemed to be standing on a completely inverted plane, looking down at him.
Schiller reached out to pull down his hood, but the other seemed to be merely a phantom in the moonlight, vanishing the moment he touched him. In a flash, Schiller found himself on the rooftop of a building in London, surrounded by layers upon layers of rooftops.
Schiller descended the stairs beside him and hailed a taxi to the street where the Forgotten Bar was located. Just after he left, a hazy, moon-white figure appeared where he had been standing, its long robes billowing like a curtain in the London drizzle.
